XCOM 2, one of the best turn-based strategy games ever, is free all week on the Epic Games Store. If you’ve never tried a game of this genre, it’s the perfect entry point: reasonably recent (dating back to 2016), with rich and multifaceted gameplay, and a very solid and loyal community of fans. It has a score of 88 on Metacritic and has been in the top 10 of the best games of 2016, and of course over time it has been supported and expanded by the developers.
XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the reboot of the franchise whose debut dates back to the mid-90s, when it had a slightly different name, namely X-COM with the hyphen. It takes place in 2035, so about twenty years after the events of Enemy Unknown and its expansion, and sees an Earth finally controlled by aliens thanks to the puppet administration known as ADVENT. The player takes on the role of the Commander, kidnapped and held in stasis by the aliens and freed by the resistance forces.
It is important to note that only the base game is free: however, the DLC main War of the Chosen is available on offer along with all other minors at a super discounted price of € 8.99. To specify the bundle includes:
- War of the Chosen
- Resistance Warrior Pack
- Anarchy’s Children
- Alien Hunters
- Shen’s Last Gift
XCOM 2 is published by 2K Games and developed by Firaxis Games, which has so far covered all the games in the reboot, most of the DLC included. It is worth noting that while Enemy Unknown has won many more Game of the Year, it is XCOM 2 that has the highest score on Metacritic, even if by only one point compared to its predecessor. The third installment, Chimera Squad, was released in 2020, but was not as popular.
To keep company at XCOM 2 there is Insurmountable, which we could define as a sort of roguelike in which, instead of dungeons full of monsters, you explore the peaks of the mountains. There is full of deadly dangers even without the need to resort to dragons and goblins. In any case, it is a clearly more niche title, but those who have played it have appreciated it.
We remember that once you have redeemed a free game on the Epic Games Store it is available forever on your account. To get it just go to the official website of the store, search for the game (in the case of XCOM 2 just press the SOURCE link below) and press the Get button (of course after logging in).
