Stellantis, a joint venture with LG Energy Solution for a gigafactory in Canada

Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 plan provides for the construction of several gigafactories in Europe and America to have an adequate supply of batteries for the new electric models. After confirming the new Termoli factory, the automotive group announced the location of the plant which will be created through the joint venture with LG Energy Solution announced in October 2021. Joint venture which, specifically, will produce cells and modules for ion batteries of lithium to meet a significant portion of Stellantis’ vehicle manufacturing needs in North America.

Overall, the two companies will invest $ 4.1 billion to start operationswhich will also include a new battery manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Construction of this new gigafactory is expected to begin by the end of the year. Battery production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2024.

Stellantis said the new battery factory will have one capacity of 45 GWh and it will be very important for the local economy as it will create 2,500 new jobs.

With the location of the manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario, home to Canada’s largest automotive cluster, Stellantis and LGES expect the facility to act as a catalyst for building a strong battery supply chain in the region. Canada is committed to establishing a large local battery ecosystem by leveraging a leadership position in renewable electricity generation, among other factors.

Thanks to this new factory, Stellantis will be able to further its electrification goals. For 2030, the automotive group expects 50% of passenger car and light commercial vehicle sales in North America to be related to electric models. Thanks to this announcement, LG Energy Solution has secured a combined annual production capacity of over 200 GWh in North America.

The battery maker previously announced plans to invest approximately $ 4.6 billion in dedicated battery manufacturing facilities in North America. Globally, the company is in the process of expanding its international manufacturing network to more continents, including countries such as Canada, the United States, Poland, Indonesia, China and South Korea.
