MediaTek announced that i SoC for Smart TV of the Pentonic series, presented last November, will support some advanced features that will improve the user experience of the Dolby Vision, the HDR format with dynamic metadata. The novelties are essentially two: the first will debut this year on LG TVs in the 2022 range. We refer to Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail, a solution developed to improve the previous version (Dolby Vision IQ) in order to obtain a higher contrast ratio and a greater level of detailboth in the darkest portions of the image and in the brightest ones.
Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail does not require specially developed content. On the other hand, however, it requires a higher computing capacity and it is therefore not possible to add it to any TV. Precisely for this reason MediaTek has collaborated with Dolby for the implementation of this technology, combining Precision Detail with Intelligent Viewcapable of processing multiple Dolby Vision video streams at the same time.
MediaTek claims that Pentonic SoCs are therefore capable of displaying Dolby Vision content even on multiple windows, so even with picture-in-picture (secondary screen within a small window) or picture-and-picture (side-by-side windows).
The second novelty instead involves i video games: all products equipped with the new SoCs will be able to take advantage of the titles in Dolby Vision with Ultra HD resolution and 120 Hz simultaneously, a combination that is currently only available on select LG TVs. The Pentonic System-on-a-Chip will also allow you to enjoy Dolby Vision games together withAuto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and al Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), further increasing the performance in terms of latency and quality.
The SoC will be available to all TV manufacturers starting with second half of 2022. This means that, barring surprises, the first products will almost certainly arrive on the market at the beginning of 2023: it takes time to integrate the electronics into the models under development and to put them on the market. Recall that MediaTek SoCs are present in many Smart TVs: we mention for example Sony, Philips and TCL.
