Gmail, from 8 February we change: the news coming to the desktop between interface and functions

Google is preparing to refresh Gmail by making the web app more suited to the aesthetic standards of the Material You while ensuring a greater integration between services which can be accessed as Meet, Chat and Spaces. The Mountain View company expects a period of acclimatization, so as to allow users to get used to the renewed interface. Users will find a layout that broadly incorporates what is already available on the mobile version.

Google’s intention is to simplify the user experience, making it more fulfilling. In practice, all the tools will be available quickly, without the need to navigate between different tabs: the inbox, chats and everything else will be immediately accessible from the side menu on the left.

The notification bubbles which indicate the number of unread messages – in perfect mobile style – for an easier understanding of what still needs to be displayed. Soon the search bar will also allow you to find the results of emails and chats.

The release is divided into three tranches:

  • from 8 February:

    • possibility to activate the new layout manually. You can return to the classic view from the Settings menu
    • note: from February 8 and for the following 15 days for Rapid Release domains, from February 22 for all others
  • from April:

    • automatic activation of the new interface, but it is always possible to manually restore the classic version
  • from the end of the second quarter (therefore around June):

    • the renewed interface will be the only one available, and it will be impossible to go back to the classic one
    • simplified web chat browsing is envisaged ( You will no longer be able to configure the chat to display on the right side of the Gmail screen

The new Gmail on desktop is intended for:

Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, Frontline, Nonprofit, G Suite Basic and Business

However, it will not be available to Google Workspace Essentials users.
