Crimes of the Future, Cronenberg returns to his most disturbing origins | Teaser

The first teaser trailer of Crimes Of The Futurethe next film by David Cronenberg in which the director moves in the terrain most congenial to him – the body horror more disturbing, mixed with dystopian sci-fi. In short, one of those movies that after seeing them you need at least one episode of the Simpsons before going to sleep. The film will be released in June; for the moment we do not have a more precise date.

Little curiosity: Cronenberg has already directed a film with this name. It dates back to 1970, and is in fact his second ever effort. However, the two projects are completely unrelated. The new one Crimes Of The Future will tell the story of performance artist Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) and his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) struggling with a new exhibition, in which the organs of Tenser himself are exposed while undergoing a process of metamorphosis. In the future in which the film is set, intense modification of one’s body has become the norm, but the audacity of the project attracts the attention of the authorities – in particular of investigator Timlin (Kristen Stewart).

It was Mortensen himself who revealed, in February 2021, that he was working on a new project by Cronenberg, the Canadian cult director, author of films such as La Mosca, Videodrome, The Naked Meal and eXistenZhowever, anticipating an intention to return to its most visceral and disturbing origins.

In addition to the three main actors, the cast will also include Scott Speedman (Underworld, Grey’s Anatomy) and Don McKellar (who previously worked with Cronenberg at eXistenZ). Filming took place in Greece around last summer. The film will debut at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, and will compete for the Palme d’Or. We do not yet have details on distribution in Europe, but streaming companies such as Netflix, Prime Video or Apple TV + are not involved, at least for now.
