Bruce Willis sick, satire takes a step back: the actor’s award canceled

Between Oscar awards and fistfights worthy of the best films by Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, in these days there has also been space for Razzie Awards with which every year the worst actors, directors and screenplays of the past year are awarded. We have seen that Netflix has made a big deal by taking home five awards out of ten categories, and among the winners there is also Bruce Willisto which a category has even been dedicated: “Worst performance of Bruce Willis in 2021“.

Well, after the announcement of Willis retirement due to health problems, the two co-founders of the Razzie Awards John Wilson and Mo Murphy have decided to cancel the award dedicated to the actor. The motivation is very simple:

If someone’s medical condition is a factor in their decision making and / or performance, we understand that giving them a Razzie is inappropriate.

Everything as it should go, then: the satire takes a step back when in front of it there is something as serious as an illness. But that’s not exactly how it wentbecause before the above message was released, the official Razzie Awards Twitter account had posted this post:

The Razzies are truly sorry for the condition diagnosed in Bruce Willis. Perhaps that explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and family.

There are those who have not taken this message well, although we must realize that it is the result of a reality that has made (and still does) its business out of satire and teasing. It could be read as a particular way – à la Razzie Awards, in fact – of communicating a more serious thought, but it can also be misinterpreted and considered disrespectful. So read it i fan of the actor, how badly they digested this misplaced raging in such a difficult moment as the abandonment of the scenes for health reasons.
